Paid Employment While Studying

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) allow students at Australian Trade College North Brisbane (typically year 11 and 12 students) to work with an employer in a real workplace as paid employees while still at school.

Students benefit from hands-on experience without having to leave school. Students at the Australian Trade College North Brisbane will spend a minimum of two days per week in PAID employment, while the majority of other Queensland schools only offer students to participate in SATs one day per week. At the same time, students undertake a training qualification with a registered training organisation (like the Australian Trade Training College) chosen by both the employer and the student to receive nationally recognised vocational training qualifications.

Students are paid for the time spent working, including an extra amount to compensate for not receiving recreation and sick leave, but are not paid for the training component delivered by the registered training organisation or RTO.

On-The-Job Learning Earns QCE Points

The on-the-job learning component of school-based apprenticeships contribute valuable points towards a student’s Queensland Certificate in Education (QCE), and also train towards a qualification (Certificate III) in their chosen career that will be recognised Australia wide.

The Australian Trade College North Brisbane does not guarantee a student employment in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Our aim is that through our extensive industry engagement work experience program, students develop work ready skills and confidence to either secure a school-based apprenticeship during their senior learning phase (Year 11 & Year 12) or full-time employment post graduation.

Every year since the Australian Trade College North Brisbane commenced training the very best Queensland tradies, a minimum of 80% of Year 12 graduates secure full-time employment within 3 months of graduation.
