Jimmy Hodgson’s always felt he was destined to become a plumber.
His journey began when he enrolled at the College as a Cadet, inspired by the experience of his cousin, a former student who successfully completed his training and went on to become a qualified carpenter.
Before starting at the College, Jimmy already knew that plumbing was the trade he wanted to pursue. Hearing firsthand about the opportunities and support available through the College gave him the confidence to take the next step toward his future career.
Reflecting on his first days as a Cadet, Jimmy said one of the highlights was how easy it was to connect with other students.
“Everyone was new, and we were all trying something different,” he said. “It made it easy to make friends and settle in.”
What stood out most to him was the way trainers and teachers encouraged students to take responsibility for their learning and growth.
“They treated us like young adults and expected us to step up. That helped me mature, become more independent, and prepare for life beyond school.”
After completing the Cadet program, Jimmy progressed into Year 11 and began studying his Certificate II in Plumbing.
“To be honest, I never would have thought I’d be standing in front of a crowd as a Student Ambassador,” he said. “The College has helped me build confidence and push myself outside my comfort zone.”
A key part of his learning journey has been gaining hands-on industry experience. Over the course of his studies, Jimmy completed 12 weeks of work experience in the plumbing industry, giving him valuable insight into the day-to-day realities of the trade.
Like many students, Jimmy encountered setbacks along the way, with some promising apprenticeship opportunities failing to eventuate despite positive discussions with employers.
Rather than giving up, Jimmy used those experiences as motivation.
“Those challenges taught me resilience and made me even more determined to achieve my goals,” he said.
That determination recently paid off when Jimmy secured a school-based apprenticeship with Waller Plumbing in Wynnum, a milestone he describes as one of the proudest moments of his life.

Supported by his College Industry Officer and his father, Jimmy officially signed his apprenticeship agreement, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in his career.
Looking back on his journey so far, Jimmy credits the College, along with the support of his teachers, trainers and family, for helping him achieve his goals.
For future students considering the College, Jimmy’s advice is simple:
“Get involved, have a go, and make the most of the opportunities you’re given. You never know where they might lead.”
